Why is the first photo slow?

The HEIC decoder (about 1.3 MB) is loaded the first time. After that, photos convert quickly.

Does it keep the quality?

Yes. Quality 90 looks the same as the original for almost every photo; use 100 if you need the most detail.

How do I stop my iPhone saving HEIC?

Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG.
