A real recording of the tool, no sound — the steps are written on the video and below.
How it works
The editor opens with a 1280 × 720 thumbnail template. Change the words, drop in your photo (Photos → Add photos) and move things around. For a cut-out of yourself, remove the background first with the free Background Remover, then press “Use in Design Maker”.
Thumbnails are seen small — on phones they are often only 150 to 250 pixels wide — so the templates use two to four big words with thick outlines and strong contrast, the style that reads at that size.
How to use the YouTube Thumbnail Maker, step by step
- Change the title words (two to four words work best).
- Add your photo: Photos → Add photos, then resize it; or use a cut-out from the Background Remover.
- Add an arrow, circle or emoji sticker to point at the important thing.
- Download JPG (smallest file) — or Double size for a sharper 2560 × 1440 image.
- In YouTube Studio: Details → Thumbnail → Upload file.

Tips
- Faces with clear emotion and big readable text get more clicks than busy collages.
- Check the bottom-right corner: YouTube puts the video length there.
- Use the same colours and font on every thumbnail so viewers recognise your channel.
- Look at your thumbnail at phone size before uploading — if you can't read it, use fewer words.
Questions
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
1280 × 720 pixels (16:9) is the standard; YouTube also accepts larger 16:9 images up to 4K, at least 640 pixels wide.
Why won't YouTube accept my thumbnail?
Usually the file is too big for the phone app (over 2 MB) — download JPG instead of PNG — or your channel is not yet verified for custom thumbnails.
Can I put my own photo with no background?
Yes. Remove the background in the Background Remover and press “Use in Design Maker”.
Is it free with no watermark?
Yes.
